You can now buy Grandmother’s Garden and other stories on our online store (www.beforeweforget.org/buy). There’s also a free bookmark in every book. All proceeds (after postage, registration, and handling charges) will go to a dementia-related cause. If you are in Singapore, you can buy the books at Select Books and at other major bookstores.
Profoundly beautiful stories of love and loss poured into the campaign website as Before We forget grew. But even as the internet affords the luxury of publishing at almost no cost, it deprives these stories from forming a whole and reduces them to moments. Arranged chronologically, these stories cannot build upon each other in a narrative. They remain inchoate. By selecting, editing, and arranging these stories in the company of previously unpublished material, I wish to provide a complete emotional journey.
Grandmother’s Garden and other stories will be launched on Saturday 18 August 2012, 3.15pm to 5:00pm at the Chamber of The Arts House at The Old Parliament. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. There will be a pre-launch screening of the Before We Forget documentary at 2.00pm.
Grandmother’s Garden and other stories brings together the stories of more than 30 people, including writers Mr Wang Says So, and Mr Miyagi, filmmaker Boo Junfeng, and photojournalist Bob Lee. The poetry, prose, photographs, artwork, and illustrations in this book speak of exhaustion, guilt, acceptance, strength, love, and courage.
Before We Forget is compiling a book of stories about people with dementia and their family members. If you like to see your story in print, please send us your story, photographs & illustrations (or email firstname.lastname@example.org) before 16 July 2012.
